The Chicago White Sox-Tampa Bay Rays played in front of an attendance of 974 people Monday during the home opener ballgame at Guaranteed Rate Field, according to CBS Sports.
Because of season ticket sales, the announced attendance for the game was 10,377, but earlier snowfall, 35 degree temperatures and 11 mile an hour winds apparently kept most fans away, CBS Sports reported.
The Chicago Cubs postponed their Wrigley Field game against the Pittsburgh Pirates because of weather. The Chicago Tribune wrote that more than two inches of snow fell on the playing surface of the historic park Monday.
WLS-TV meteorologist Cheryl Scott told the Tribune that since Lake Michigan is closer to Wrigley Field that Guarantee Rate Field, northeast winds blowing off the lake affected the Cubs a little more than the White Sox.
But the Guarantee Rate Field ground crew was able to clear the snow off the field in time to keep the White Sox's start against the Rays. The White Sox, which has not won a home game this season, lost to the Rays 5-4 Monday.
Some shared their observances of the near empty ballpark on Twitter.
