'White Appreciation Day' Promo at Barbecue Joint Causes Backlash

By    |   Friday, 08 May 2015 04:57 PM EDT

The launch of a “White Appreciation Day” by a Colorado barbecue joint is generating jokes and criticism on the Internet, but the restaurant’s Hispanic owner is standing by his decision.

“We have a whole month for Black History Month," Edgar Antillon, co-owner of Rubbin Buttz BBQ in Milliken, told KUSA. "We have a whole month for Hispanic Heritage Month, so we thought the least we could do was offer one day to appreciate white Americans."

It started out as a joke, but Antillon and co-owner Miguel Jimenez decided to make it a real thing and scheduled the day white people will get 10 percent off for June 11.

Their decision caused a firestorm online.

Many people went on Yelp to express their disapproval of the idea.

"'White Appreciation Day'.... Absolutely sickening. What are you celebrating? The theft of an entire country? The Native American Genocide? The kidnapping and forced slavery of millions of Africans? The white washing of history?" one person wrote. "The bigotry and hatred shown to immigrants? Celebrating the color of your skin is not celebrating your 'heritage,' it is celebrating your Supremacy. I sincerely hope your disgusting business gets shut down."

Antillon told KUSA that he doesn’t mean to discriminate with the discount, and said he had been discriminated against in the past. "We're all American, whether you came from a different country, or you were born here," he said. "We're all American."
