The weekend box office for "Solo: A Star Wars Story" sputtered again in its second week, tumbling 66 percent from its already lower-than-expected first weekend take at theaters, the website The Wrap reported.
No matter how the numbers have been juggled, "Solo," a prequel of "Star Wars" favorite space pirate and father of new "Star Wars" villain Kylo Ren, has been disappointing. The film made $84.7 million during its Friday-Sunday launch last week, The Wrap said.
This past weekend, the movie's income dropped to $29 million, The Wrap reported. In fact, "Solo's" opening 10-day total of $148 million was less than the opening weekend for Lucasfilm's other stand-alone "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" ($155 million).
Despite the drop, "Solo" was able to hang on to the top spot at the box office for the second consecutive week, with "Deadpool 2" coming in second with $23.3 million followed by newcomer "Adrift," which took in $11.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
CNN reported that things are about to get worse for "Solo" as audiences will be fed three big budget contenders in June with "Ocean's 8," on Friday, "Incredibles 2" on June 15, and "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" on June 22.
Jeff Bock, senior box office analyst at Exhibitor Relations, told CNNMoney last week that with its $250 million production cost – sans marketing – it may be difficult for the movie to break even.
Bock said "Solo" could make less than $450 million, big money for most movies, but a pittance for a franchise that raked in more than billion dollars for its last two releases – "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" ($1.32 billion) and "Rogue One" ($1.05 billion), CNN noted.
It also pales in the face with Disney's Marvel franchise ranking out $1 billion for movies in the last four months with "Avengers: Infinity Wars" ($1.9 billion worldwide), and "Black Panther," ($1.3 billion), according to Box Office Mojo.
