The weekend box office was topped by "Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation" while The Rock's latest movie, "Skyscraper," tanked, Business Insider noted.
For the last three years, Dwayne Johnson's cinematic efforts have done exceedingly well, however, his latest thrilling disaster movie was no match for the slew of sequels it was up against.
With 3,700 screenings, "Skyscraper" brought in an estimated $25.5 million, putting it in a disappointing third place at the weekend box office.
Meanwhile Adam Sandler's "Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation" came out on top with an estimated $44.1 million while Disney/Marvel's "Ant-Man and the Wasp" came in second with around $30 million.
Sony president of worldwide marketing and distribution Josh Greenstein said he was happy with the outcome for the "Hotel Transylvania 3," which premiered against a competitive field.
"We expected a three-horse race and we are incredibly happy to be number one. It's a very competitive market," he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The original film in the franchise, "Hotel Transylvania" bowed with $442 million in 2012, while the sequel posted $48 million, The HuffPost noted.
While the third edition to the series may be a top performer, the movie drew a lukewarm audience rating of 56 percent on Rotten Tomatoes as of Monday.
"Ant-Man and the Wasp" proved to be far more popular among audiences, who gave it an 80 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of Monday.
The original film, "Ant-Man" also opened with a strong presence at the box office in 2015, raking in $58 million in North America.
While critics may have slammed "Skyscraper," the movie received a surprising 79 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of Monday.
