A wall collapse at a wedding in India killed 24 people and injured 28 more at the venue in Bharatpur during a strong, windy storm.
Hundreds of guests were attending the wedding dinner and gathering outside when the winds forced indoors, The Associated Press reported.
When the 90-foot-long wall fell, it trapped people inside the hall.
The wind also caused a power outage that hampered rescue efforts, which all had to be done by hand, CNN reported.
The 24 dead included 11 women and four children. Many of those hurt received head injuries when the wall collapsed.
The owner of the wedding hall was arrested for “culpable homicide not amounting to murder” after the incident, superintendent of police Anil Tank told CNN, and others involved with the building are being investigated.
A committee was formed in the region to inspect other wedding venues for similar weaknesses, Tank said. The Bharatpur region has experienced other collapses because it is a marshy area and because builders often use substandard materials and building methods, The New York Times reported.
Indian prime minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter that survivors of the incident and the next of kin of those who died would be compensated financially, the NYT reported.
“The incident in Bharatpur has pained me beyond words,” Modi tweeted. “My thoughts are with the families of the deceased. I hope the injured recover soon.”
In 2013, a building in Mumbai, India, that had been constructed illegally killed 74 people.
