Esteban Smith, a 23-year-old U.S. Marine who was wanted in connection with a North Carolina murder, has been identified as
the gunman responsible for a shooting spree in West Texas that killed one and wounded five others Sunday morning.
Smith, who was based out of North Carolina's Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base, was killed in a shootout with a state trooper and a state game warden shortly after the 90-minute murderous shooting rampage, according to Tom Vinger, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman.
Marine Corps spokesman, Master Sergeant JD Cress, also confirmed that authorities are investigating a possible link between the Eden, TX shooting and a Jacksonville, N.C. murder that occurred near Camp Lejeune over the weekend.

According to UPI.com, a woman's body found Sunday at a motel in Jacksonville, N.C.
During the Eden, TX shooting spree,
the active duty Marine had apparently shot vehicles at random, reported CBS News.
The rampage began at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning, when Smith allegedly shot two people in a parked car before proceeding to an area convenient store and shooting another two individuals in a car.
One hour later, Smith shot a fifth victim, before shooting and wounding Concho County Sheriff Richard Doane shortly after 6 a.m.
After Smith was killed by state troopers, authorities found one of the victims, 41-year-old Alicia Torres, shot to death in her car.
Three people have been
treated for their wounds at local hospitals and subsequently discharged, the Minnesota Star Tribune reports.

The remaining two shooting victims, one of whom is Concho County Sheriff Richard Doane, are still hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds.
Authorities recovered an assault rifle, handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in Smith's car, according to Texas' Department of Public Safety.
