A new line of “Impeach 45” clothing being sold on Walmart's website by a third party retailer has caused many who support President Donald Trump to call for a boycott of the stores and website.
Ryan Fournier, who founded Students for Trump in 2015, first brought the clothing to the public’s attention, tweeting “@walmart why are you selling Impeach 45 baby clothes on your website???? What kind of message are you trying to send?”
The clothing comes in baby and adult sizes and is sold alongside pro-Trump selections like “Make America Great Again” and “Donald Trump Speaks for Me” clothing, according to USA Today.
Chairman of Reputation Management Consultants Eric Schiffer told USA Today the anti-Trump clothing was a risk for the retailer because many Trump supporters shop there. “Walmart lit the torch of war with the base of Donald Trump,” Schiffer said. “To attack the president is the kiss of death.”
Maurice Schweitzer of the Wharton School of Business disagreed, however, saying there “aren’t good alternatives to Walmart” for many people and that the company shouldn’t be concerned about the boycott.
“In today’s environment, there’s so many calls for boycotts,” Schweitzer said, USA Today reported. “Boycotts rarely have long-lasting effects.”
Walmart previously removed clothing that said “Bulletproof – Black Lives Matter” after the Fraternal Order of Police objected.
Twitter users were vocal in their disapproval of the "Impeach 45" clothing.
Walmart responded to Fournier by tweeting that the clothing was being removed pending a review of its Marketplace policies.
