Wis. Gov. Walker's Budget Bill in Legal Limbo

Gov. Scott Walker’s push to implement his budget-repair bill that eliminated the collective bargaining for public workers is in limbo due to a judge putting on a hold on it, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Thursday.

A state labor commission will most likely miss a May 1 deadline required to finish elections on whether the unions will have to decertify. Under the new law, the majority of union members must vote every year to keep the union or they will cease to function.

Opponent of the bill are arguing that GOP lawmakers violated the state’s open meetings law and its constitution in passing the legislation. A judge held up the law to hear the case.

"We can't actually do anything unless and until this thing actually becomes law," said Peter Davis, general counsel of the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission.

Davis doesn’t think his agency can finish the voting by the deadline in the legislation and will simply move as quickly as it can if the measure takes effect.
