Pa. Issues Voter-Only Photo ID Card

By    |   Tuesday, 28 August 2012 12:10 PM EDT

Pennsylvania election officials have released a new photo identification card just for people who have trouble complying with the state’s new voter law.

Voters who don’t have the documents necessary for a state non-driver’s ID can still get the photo voter card for free through Department of Transportation licensing centers, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The voter-only cards were announced earlier this summer after it was revealed some residents, especially older ones born in other states, could not get an official copy of a birth certificate or Social Security card in time to be approved for a non-driver’s ID.

The new ID requires applicants to only provide their name, Social Security number, proof of address, and any address or name change that occurred in the last year. The applicant must also be registered to vote.

Despite the targeted IDs, opponents of the new law contend that getting the card is still difficult, especially for people without transportation, the elderly, disabled, the poor, and non-English speakers.

A state court denied a lawsuit earlier this summer aimed at blocking the new law, but opponents plan to argue the case in an appeal to the state Supreme Court on Sept. 13.

The new non-driver ID car may only be used for voting. Polling places have also been instructed to accept a valid driver’s license, passport, military or government ID, or a college student ID with an expiration date.
