Vince Lombardi Sweater Purchased for 58 Cents Could Sell for $20K

A Vince Lombardi sweater worn by the NFL legend was purchased at a North Carolina Goodwill store last summer for 58 cents and could now sell for as much as $20,000 at auction.

Sean and Rikki McEvoy, who own the vintage clothing shop Roslyn VTG Trading Co. in Knoxville, Tennessee, were bargain hunting for their store last summer at a Goodwill Outlet in Asheville, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.

Tucked in the bundle of clothes the couple gathered was a dark, lightweight sweater with "West Point" on the front. The couple said they thought the sweater was a find in itself just noting the stitching and material, the Citizen-Times noted.

But several months ago, Rikki McEvoy said she came across the vintage sweater back home in Knoxville and noticed the name "Lombardi" written on the tag.

"I was doing repairs, and I had that sweater out," she told the Citizen-Times. "It was sitting in my lap, and I just had this feeling that I'm going to regret this if I touch it or change anything about it."

"I had never done anything like that before, and I decided to put it back. Before I did, I looked over it, and (on the inside) I saw this name Lombardi. I don't know anything about sports, so I didn't think anything of it."

Then, in December, Sean McEvoy was watching an HBO documentary and saw a photo of the Lombardi wearing the West Point sweater. The legendary NFL coach reportedly served as an assistant at the academy from 1949 to 1953 under Red Blaik.

"I told my wife, 'Wouldn't it be cool if we had that exact sweater?'" McEvoy told The Washington Post. That's when his wife informed him that she found the label inside the sweater they had that read "Lombardi."

Initially, the Pro Football Hall of Fame wanted the couple to donate the Lombardi sweater, but they decided to auction it off. Heritage Auctions, in Dallas, authenticated the item and will place it up for auction on Feb. 22. Chris Nerat, consignment director at Heritage, told the Citizen-Times that the Lombardi find was amazing.

"Just the fact that there's any West Point sweater from that era that exists and then for it to be a Lombardi," he said.
