Vince McMahon could be flirting with an XFL relaunch, the football league he started that lasted one season in 2011, the website Deadspin wrote.
A WWE spokesman confirmed last week to Deadspin that McMahon has created a separate entity called Alpha Entertainment and it will look at new investment opportunities including football.
On Thursday, ESPN business reporter Darren Rovell broke the news that McMahon was protecting trademarks to the XFL.
ESPN reported that McMahonm, chairman and chief executive of World Wrestling Entertainment, filed details with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission about his sale of 3.34 million shares of WWE, totaling roughly $100 million.
"If the XFL isn't coming back, Vince McMahon is doing a poor job of convincing the world that's true," wrote Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports.com. "… The trademarks, which were 'abandoned' between 2002 and 2005, also cover merchandise related to a potential league."
Social media users shared mixed reactions.
