Director James Cameron and his wife have announced the elementary school they opened in 2006 will switch to an entirely vegan menu.
The Muse School, in Calabasas, California, has focused on sustainability since it was founded by Cameron's wife, Suzy Amis-Cameron, in 2006.
That mission advanced further when Amis-Cameron announced at a recent Red Carpet Green Dress event that the school’s lunches would become entirely plant-based, The Hollywood Reporter said.
"In the fall of 2015, MUSE will be the only school we are aware of that is completely plant-based,"
Amis-Cameron said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Plant-based eating — meaning the meals that are served at Muse will be 100 percent plant-based. The average person would say vegan, but we say whole food, plant-based. It’s about raising kids who don’t think it’s strange or exotic or worthy of a pat on the back to be doing the right thing for the living biosphere."
“One of the driving forces behind the school’s environmental stewardship is Paul Hudak, educator and gardener, whose passion for teaching children about the joys of gardening is palpable when one speaks with him,” the school’s website said. Hudak works with the children to manage 50 raised beds on campus, and more will be added.
“We’re a small farm at this point,” Hudak said on the website. “Every student works in the gardens at least twice a week, learning about every aspect of health and food, sustainability, and even the business aspects that apply. We grow as much as we can for our own menu, at least 25 percent now, more than 150 different herbs, vegetables, and flowers, all organically. We hope to be at 50 to 60 percent by the end of the year.”
