Utah, Minnesota, and North Dakota topped WalletHub’s “Most Charitable States” list.
WalletHub released its report on 2016’s Most Charitable States on Tuesday, which has been promoted as the annual #GivingTuesday.
The latest World Giving Index shows that Americans are among the most charitable people in the world, ranking second out of 140 countries on this year’s list, according to the Charities Aid Foundation.

In determining this list of charitable states, WalletHub placed a focus on 13 key metrics, ranging from volunteer rate to percentage of income donated to percentage of sheltered homeless.
According to the study, Utah recorded the most impressive numbers among all states, with a total score of 68.62. It included the highest volunteer rate with 39.3 percent and the highest percentage of donated income with 6.61 percent.
Fifty-six percent of Utah residents claimed to have donated their time this year, which also ranked No. 1 among states, and the state recorded the most volunteering hours per capita at 75.6.
Minnesota was the closest state to Utah on WalletHub’s list, recording a total score of 61.38, and ranking fifth in volunteering and service and third in charitable giving.
North Dakota was a close third on the list with a total score of 59.35, while ranking fourth in volunteering and service and 10th in charitable giving.
Maryland and Vermont were among other states that recorded high numbers in at least one category.
Maryland had the highest “percentage of taxpayers who donated money to charity,” with 38.2 percent.
Vermont recorded the most “public charities per capita,” 27.07, which is 4.5 times more than in Nevada, which had the lowest ranking in this metric, 6.05.
