10 Richest Presidents in US History

While Democrats attempt to examine the president’s finances one thing they can be assured of is that he is the richest president in U.S. history. After Trump – whose fortune has been estimated from $2 billion to $10 billion -- the list of richest presidents in U.S. history may surprise you.

Here are the 10 richest presidents:

1. Donald Trump: $3.7 billion.  Until his tax returns are released, estimates of Trump's wealth vary greatly, but Forbes puts his worth at $3.7 billion.
2.  John F. Kennedy: $1 billion.  JFK’s wealth was tied up in a family trust shared with his siblings.  Just how much that trust was worth was never clear but $1 billion is the best estimate.
3. George Washington: $525 million. Washington owned between 7,000 and 8,000 acres of prime Virginia farm land, 300 slaves, and land in the Ohio Valley and New York as well.
4. Thomas Jefferson: $212 million.  Jefferson owned 5,000 acres of prime land and was very wealthy at his peak, but eventually he lost most of his fortune and was heavily in debt at his death.
5. Theodore Roosevelt: $125 million.  Teddy inherited his wealth and was never interested in making more money.
6.  Andrew Jackson: $119 million.  Jackson made his wealth from cotton grown on his massive Tennessee plantation, the Hermitage, which was farmed by several hundred slaves.
7. James Madison: $101 million.  Like Jefferson, Madison ran into severe financial problems at the end of his life because of declining tobacco prices and mismanagement by family members of his land.  But at his peak before becoming president, he was worth $10 million.
8. Lyndon B. Johnson: $98 million.  LBJ grew up poor and most of his wealth came from his wife, Lady Bird.  She invested heavily in radio and TV stations that became immensely lucrative at least in part because of LBJ influencing the FCC.
9. Bill Clinton: $80 million. Clinton amassed most of his wealth since leaving office, primarily from book deals and speaking engagements.
10.  Herbert Hoover: $75 million. Hoover made his fortune as a mining executive, reportedly controlling mining operations before entering public life.
