A Long Island couple says UPS delivered an assault rifle instead of the toy plane they ordered for a friend’s child for Christmas.
The couple had ordered a toy plane as a gift and drove around with it in their car before opening it, according to CBS New York. Their 6-year-old granddaughter was present when they opened the erroneous package, the husband of the couple, who did not want to be identified by name, told WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall.
The couple quickly ushered their grandchild out of the room and called police when they realized what was in the package. Police picked up the package, and UPS said they were investigating what happened.
“What if it went to someone having ill intentions?” the husband asked CBS.
The couple told Newsday the package contained a semi-automatic rifle, scope, stand, ammo clip, and copies of the seller’s driver’s license and concealed carry permit.
UPS said it does sometimes ship firearms under strict policies and regulations, but that they don’t allow them to be shipped to consumers.
“UPS puts the responsibility with the shippers of regulated goods to follow the requirements for labeling and specific packaging,” CBS reported.
UPS also said it was in contact with the couple to ensure they get the toy they ordered before Christmas, CBS reported.
