The anti-abortion drama "Unplanned" doubled initial estimates for its box office opening over the weekend, bringing in $6.1 million from 1,059 theaters despite tracking that suggested it would open to $3 million.

The opening marked the second-best start for its faith-based distributor Pure Flix, coming in behind "God's Not Dead 2" at $7.6 million, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

"Unplanned" did its largest business in theaters in the Midwest and South, not in New York City or Los Angeles, which are usually on the list of a movie's top 20 grossing theaters. Instead, the movie's top theater was the AMC Northpark 15 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, while no theaters in New York City or Los Angeles made the list.

Other top locations were St. Louis; Detroit; Wichita, Kansas; Temecula in Southern California's Riverside County; Salt Lake City; Orange County, California; Kansas City; Odessa, Texas; and Nashville.

The movie is about Abby Johnson, who left Planned Parenthood and became a pro-life activist after witnessing an abortion at 13 weeks. It was financed in part by My Pillow founder Michael Lindell.

The film's producers fought unsuccessfully to overturn the picture's R-rating, and the movie has had its difficulties, including having its Twitter account suspended briefly Saturday.

“To bring the story of Abby Johnson to audiences and have them show up in such large numbers shows how abortion is so important to bring to audiences," said Pure Flix CEO Michael Scott.
