An MLB umpire removed a live moth from his ear with the help of a trainer during the ninth inning of the New York Yankees-Chicago White Sox game Wednesday night.
Second base umpire Bruce Dreckman ran off the field in Chicago during the bottom of the ninth inning and headed over to Yankees trainer Steve Donohue for help. Donohue gave Dreckman a pair of tweezers, which he used to pull a large, live moth out of his ear.
The moth survived the amazing ordeal, and Dreckman went back to second base to finish the game. He did, however, put his hands over his ears for a few seconds and shake his head as if to say, “I can’t believe a moth flew into my ear!”
New York went on to win the game 7-3 after a Giancarlo Stanton grand slam in the second inning.
The last time bugs impacted a Yankees game in such a noticeable way was in Game 2 of the 2007 American League Division Series against the Cleveland Indians, when Joba Chamberlain was attacked by midges, which are tiny biting flies.
Twitter users thought the umpire played it cool in removing the moth from his ear.
