Former MMA Fighter Killed During Domestic Dispute

Former MMA fighter Tyler East was shot and killed Monday during a domestic dispute, authorities have confirmed.

East, 30, was found dead by Valencia County Sheriff’s Department officers responding to a domestic dispute call at a Los Lunas, New Mexico, residence, according to a press release.

Upon arrival at the scene, they discovered a woman believed to be East's girlfriend suffering from a gunshot wound. They also located East's body.

Police said that East and his girlfriend were having a heated argument when he shot her then dragged her out of the house. While outside, an unidentified man at the residence reportedly shot East then fled the scene. The woman was transported to a hospital in Albuquerque where she is receiving treatment for her injuries. She is in a stable condition.

East was a freshman at Los Lunas high school when he won his first New Mexico state heavyweight wrestling title in 2006, according to Albuquerque Journal. Two years later he won his second title, but the victory was marred after he pleaded no contest to a charge of aggravated battery in 2009 after reportedly beating a fellow student in gym class, MMA Junkie reported.

In 2011 he won the King of the Cage heavyweight title, but again his name was tainted when in 2012 he was arrested on domestic violence charges. An ex-girlfriend claimed he physically assaulted her while he was on a "cocaine binge." East was indicted on charges of kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, and bribery of a witness.

More recently, East's 2019 court case involved charges of battery upon a peace officer and resisting arrest, but both charges were dropped. He was also due to appear in court after allegedly stealing from his grandfather's bank account but was caught on camera last year running from the police after failing to show up at court, KRQE reported.

There are dozens of other listings for his name on the New Mexico court’s website.

In a statement, Albuquerque's Jackson-Wink MMA, which is one of the gyms where East used to train, said the fighter was "not on our roster of fighters and was terminated from our training program many years ago. We pray for all those affected by (Monday's) incident in Valencia County."

Taking to Facebook, his brother Cody, a former UFC fighter, wrote: "I love you Tyler East my little big brother. ... No more demons to fight brother you're free.
