A set of twins born minutes apart Sunday night still have birthdays in different years.
Joaquin Jr. Ontiveros was delivered at 11:58 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2017, weighing 5 pounds, 9 ounces, and his sister, Aitana de Jesus Ontiveros, was born at 12:16 a.m. Jan. 1, 2018 weighing 4 pounds, 10 ounces, Bakersfield Now reported.
Hospital staff at Delano Regional Medical Center in Delano, California, said the boy twin was the last baby born in 2017 at the hospital and his sister was the first baby born in 2018.
The twins’ mother, Maria Esperanza Flores Rios, had a due date of Jan. 27 but was scheduled for a C-section Jan. 10 due to her high-risk pregnancy.
“I’ve been doing this for 35 years, and I’ve never had this before,” said Dr. Seyed Tamjidi, who delivered the set of twins in two different years.
The hospital awards the first baby born each year with gifts from donations. The twins will receive $3,000 worth of baby supplies, said Matthew Cauthron, director at the medical center.
Although twins born in different years are rare, it happened at least three times in the U.S. last New Year’s, with twins born on separate years in San Diego, Atlanta, and Glendale, Arizona. Only one set of twins, also in San Diego, made headlines for 2015-2016 births.
