The Turpin siblings bid a bittersweet farewell to the hospital they have called home for the past two months on Thursday when they were discharged and taken to a new residence, People magazine reported.
For years the 13 Turpin siblings, ages 2 to 29, were held captive in their family home, dubbed the "House of Horrors" in Perris, California, southeast of Los Angeles, suffering alleged abuse and neglect at the hands of their parents David and Louise Turpin.
Earlier this year one teenage girl escaped and called 911, resulting in the discovery of the severely malnourished children, who had been deprived of food and water.
The seven adult siblings had been recuperating at the medical center, where staff helped nurse them back to health and developed a strong bond with them in the process.
Saying goodbye was not easy.
"It was emotional for the staff and emotional for them," Mark Uffer, the hospital's chief executive officer, told People. "This has been their home away from wherever they were at before, so it was a little bit tough for them and the staff."
The siblings' attorney, Jack Osborn, confirmed to ABC News that the oldest siblings are now sharing one home under state care while the six youngsters had been split up and were receiving care in two additional homes.
Osborn said the siblings were enjoying simple experiences such as moving into new bedrooms and having closets filled with clothes.
"They are joyful, they are warm, they are considerate. … I give them a lot of credit for helping each other, relying on each other," he told ABC News. "I think they've learned how to bring out the best in each other over the years."
Osborn added that although the older and younger siblings were separated, they chatted on skype and were hoping to reconnect in person soon, Us Magazine said.
Meanwhile their parents were charged with 12 counts of torture, seven counts of abuse of a dependent, six counts of child abuse and 12 counts of false imprisonment, the Independent noted.
David Turpin received an additional charge of committing a lewd act on a child. The couple pleaded not guilty to all charges.
