A PETA request for a roadside memorial where hundreds of turkeys were killed last month in a tractor-trailer accident has been denied by the Utah Department of Transportation.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals appealed the decision on Monday.
The proposed sign would say: “In memory of the hundreds of terrified turkeys who died here in a truck crash. Try vegan,” and
include a standard safe-driving message, Reuters reported.
On April 24, a truck carrying about 700 turkeys crashed through a guard rail and into a reservoir.
Utah Department of Transportation officials said roadside memorials are meant for grieving loved ones.
PETA’s letter of appeal, written by staffer Amy Meyer, said that "turkeys in the factory farming industry have no living relatives," Reuters reported.
"These individuals (the turkeys), who develop strong bonds and feel pain just as we do, are as deserving of our empathy as are human crash victims, which is why I hope you'll allow me, a concerned Utah resident, to erect this tribute."
