President Donald Trump’s evangelical support is at a record high, according to a poll by the Public Religion Research Institute, with 75 percent of white evangelical respondents holding a favorable view of him versus 22 percent unfavorable.
The evangelical favorable numbers far exceed the general population’s 42 percent favorable view of Trump, PPRI said.
Over the years, Trump’s support among white evangelicals has increased steadily, with favorability jumping dramatically to 61 percent by the early fall of 2016 and to 68 percent after his inauguration.
A closer look at the numbers showed modest differences by gender, with 71 percent of white evangelical women respondents with a favorable view of Trump compared to 81 percent among white evangelical men.
Among college-educated white evangelicals, PPRI said, Trump’s favorability was still a strong 68 percent, compared to 78 percent among those without a college degree.
The poll also found that, looking ahead to 2020 election, white evangelical Protestants who identify with the Republican Party said they would prefer to have Trump as president, rather than another candidate.
For the poll, PRRI conducted bilingual phone interviews with 2,020 American adults from March 14-25, The Hill reported. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
