Truckers lined a Detroit freeway early Tuesday morning with help from Michigan State Police to prevent a man from jumping off the overpass.
The event occurred between 1 and 3 a.m. on the 1-696 freeway near the Coolidge exit, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Chris Harrison, who says he was part of the “trucker wall,” wrote on Facebook that one truck started it off and then six or seven others were waved through by police on each side of the freeway to cover all the lanes under the overpass on both sides.
Police did talk the man down from the ledge, the Free Press reported.
Harrison said a patrolman walked to all the trucks, shook each driver’s hand and thanked them for their actions.
The man who wanted to jump was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, WJBK reported.
A tweet from Michigan State Police Metro Detroit showed the trucks lined up under the overpass and reminded readers that if they are struggling with suicidal thoughts or urges, they can get help through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. A subsequent tweet said people also could call someone they care about, a clergy member, or 911.
“It is our hope never to see another photo like this again,” the tweet read.
Twitter gave kudos to the state police for their quick thinking and the truck drivers for caring.
