The 2014 Atlantic hurricane season’s first named storm, Tropical Storm Arthur, has residents from Florida to North Carolina keeping a close eye on how the storm might affect their Fourth of July holiday plans.

The storm was about 100 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Tuesday and it is expected to strengthen as it crawls north, with a chance of becoming a Category 1 hurricane by Thursday, The Weather Channel said.

The center of the storm is expected to remain offshore from Florida during the next day or so, according to the National Weather Service’s National Hurricane Center, which has issued a tropical storm watch for the east coast of Florida.

Heavy rains, strong winds, and life-threatening surf and rip currents are expected.

Sustained wind speeds on Tuesday were 40 mph, and forecasters predict maximum wind speeds of 80 mph at the storm’s peak, Reuters reported.

Coastal areas from North Carolina; Cape Cod, Massachusetts; and Long Island, New York, are expected to get the brunt of the storm.

Twitter users weren't pleased by the threat of severe weather.
