Trick or Treating Meth Goes Unnoticed Until Candy Searched

Halloween trick or treating netted an 8-year-old California girl a small plastic baggie of crystal methamphetamine, the white powder known simply as meth, but it went unnoticed until her parents searched her candy a few days later.

The Contra Costa Times reported Tuesday that the girl  had gone out in the Promenade area of Hercules in northern California's east bay.

After putting the bag of candy up in the cupboard, the girl's parents took it down, looked through it, and discovered a small zip-style bag containing 0.1 gram of a whitish powder.

Suspecting it was drugs, the parents called local police, who soon confirmed it was indeed crystal methamphetamine.

"He had been checking his child's Halloween candy after putting it away on Halloween night, and while checking it found the baggie and suspected it was illegal drugs. He wanted to report it," said Hercules police Sgt. Ezra Tafesse, who added there's no suspect at this time. "This could have been intentional or it could have been accidental and we won't know until we speak with the person who did this."

"More than anything, we want to educate the public to inspect their children's candy before giving it to them," he said. He emphasized that the department was in communication with local school principals, who've promised to spread the word to parents.

Tafesse said that parents occasionally find marijuana in their children's trick-or-treat bags, but meth was much rarer.
