The town of New Canaan, Connecticut, has banned "for sale" signs in front of houses to make the town look better, reasoning that people mostly research homes for sale on the internet now, anyway.
The ban, instituted by local realtor organizations, will run for six months from July 1, 2018, to Jan. 1, 2019, the New Haven Register reported.
“This is about the beautification of New Canaan and that people do not buy homes from the (‘for sale’) signs anymore,” New Canaan Board of Realtors President Janis Hennessey said, the Register reported. “People interested in homes have access to HomeSnap and Zillow.”
About three-quarters of the people who responded to a local survey said they wanted a temporary or permanent ban on the signs, Hennessey said, the Register reported.
First Selectman Kevin Moynihan agreed and pointed out that nearby Greenwich had already banned the signs permanently with positive effects.
Hennessey said there wouldn’t be enforcement of the rule by the town, just requests to remove the signs.
“Generally speaking, people don’t call (realtors) anymore and so much information is online,” Hennessey continued. “We’re giving this a try.”
“I find it to be a little tacky and it doesn’t look so great,” resident and homeowner Priscilla Rossi told CBS 2.
“The amount of them is giving buyers an idea that this entire town is for sale,” Shawn Gardner, another resident, told the news station.
The realtor groups plan to evaluate the ban’s success after the six months are over and decide whether to make it permanent, CBS 2 reported.
