Suspected Toronto serial killer Bruce McArthur was charged on Monday after police discovered dismembered skeletal remains at a property linked to him, CBC News reported.
Here are five things to know about the 66-year-old landscaper who is suspected of burying at least five people.
1. He has been charged with first-degree murder.
Police first arrested McArthur on Jan. 18 and charged him with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the disappearance of Andrew Kinsman, who he reportedly had a relationship with, and Selim Esen, CKWX noted.
On Jan. 29, three additional first-degree murder charges were laid against McArthur in connection with the deaths of Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi and Dean Lisowick.
2. He allegedly hid his victims' remains at the bottom of planters.
Investigators discovered the dismembered remains of at least three victims hidden "at the bottom of planters" at a home McArthur had used to store his landscaping equipment, People magazine reported.
3. There could be more victims.
Toronto Police Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga said per People that police planned to excavate other sites in search for more possible victims.
"We do believe there are more (victims)," Idsinga said. "I have no idea how many more there are going to be."
4. He was married and has children.
The Toronto Star noted that McArthur married a woman by the name of Janice in 1986 and that the couple have a son and daughter together.
However, an unidentified source said McArthur began socializing with members of Toronto's gay community and that in 1999 he started a romantic relationship with Skandaraj Navaratnam, a gay man who later went missing.
5. He has a criminal record.
According to The Toronto Star, McArthur was handed a two-year conditional sentencing after attacking a man with a metal pipe in Toronto in 2001.
The sentencing prohibited him from being in the presence of male sex workers or visiting a section of downtown Toronto, which included the Gay Village.
