An apparent crossbow attack killed three people and injured another in the Toronto suburb of Scarborough on Thursday.
A crossbow was found near the victims, who all appeared to have crossbow injuries, The Associated Press reported. A suspect, a 35-year-old man, is in custody.
One of the victims was found dead on the driveway while the other two were inside a garage, The Toronto Star reported. Two were men and one was a woman.
Neighbor Jerome Cruz told the Star that he heard arguing at the house at about 1 p.m. Thursday.
"I heard somebody screaming in anger and banging. A young man screaming. I heard another man say ‘calm down’ and a lady come from the house," he said.
Police also were investigating a suspicious package that sparked fears of a bomb threat at a downtown condominium that was thought to be related to the crossbow attack, the Star said.
“We have cleared the package and there is no threat to public safety,” Supt. Bill Neadles told the Toronto Sun, confirming a link between the two scenes. “Homicide detectives have now taken over the scene.”
He provided no other details.
The three victims, who weren't identified pending notification of family, are thought to be related, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
Cruz told CBC that the screaming went on for about five minutes before everything got quiet.
Police were called to the scene by reports that someone was stabbed. It was unclear whether the injuries were caused by the crossbow being shot or whether bolts from the weapon were used like a knife to stab the victims.
"We don't have any idea with regards to why this may have happened," Constable David Hopkinson told CBC News.
A license is not required to buy a crossbow in Canada.
