The 2018 Tony nominations are in and leading contenders for Broadway awards are the musicals "Mean Girls" and "Spongebob Squarepants," with 12 nominations each, Time reported.
Close on the heels of the film and TV show-inspired acts is the critically acclaimed musical "The Band’s Visit," which clinched 11 nominations, as did the revivals of "Angels in America” and “Carousel."
"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two" and the musical revival of "My Fair Lady" each received 10 nominations.
The award ceremony is slated to take place on Sunday, June 10, and will honor the year's best Broadway productions in 26 categories, as selected by an independent committee.
Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban will host the event at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
A highlight of this year's 72nd edition of the Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards is the presentation of a Special Tony Award to both John Leguizamo and Bruce Springsteen for their contribution to theater.
Leguizamo will be acknowledged for his continued work over the last three decades, while Springsteen is receiving a Special Tony Award for his ongoing “Springsteen on Broadway" show.
The Tony Award nominees were revealed Tuesday by previous award winner Leslie Odom Jr. and American Idol star Katharine McPhee, who debuted on Broadway in April.
