Tommy Hanson, a former pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, died Monday at 29 "due to catastrophic organ failure," stunning former teammates and fans.
Hanson pitched for the Braves from 2009 to 2012 and then for the Los Angeles Angels in 2013. A representative of the Braves said some of Hanson's former teammates confirmed that he died at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta late Monday, according to
MLB.com.
WSB-TV Sports Director Zach Klein said he was contacted Monday by sources saying Hanson had fallen into a coma at the hospital and died "due to catastrophic organ failure."
Klein said the source told him that Hanson starting having problems breathing on Sunday morning and was taken to a nearby hospital. He was later moved to Piedmont where doctors started running test to diagnose his problem.
The
Atlanta Journal-Constitution said shoulder problems and a concussion helped end Hanson's baseball career.
"My condolences go out to his family and loved ones," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said, according to the Journal-Constitution. "I will always remember him as a great competitor and he will always be a Brave."
Fellow teammates, other Major League players and fans expressed their condolences on social media.
