A California man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted his mother for hiding the family's toilet paper supply.
The incident took place at around 3 a.m. on Monday in Saugus, said Shirley Miller of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, according to WLUK. The argument broke out when 26-year-old Adrian Yan accused his mother of stashing away their toilet paper, which has grown scarce amid the coronavirus epidemic.
Tension rose and Yan allegedly punched his mother. He was arrested for suspicion of battery. Yan's mother later admitted to deputies that she hid the toilet paper from her son because he uses too much, according to Miller.
"Family disturbance calls can start out over small things, and then they escalate," the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's station stated in a tweet.
Several cities have seen an increase in domestic violence cases since the coronavirus forced families indoors in isolation. Many shelters have reached their capacity and are struggling to help survivors, and, with gun sales at a record high, authorities are concerned the numbers will continue to grow, according to a CNN report.
"Domestic violence is rooted in power and control, and all of us are feeling a loss of power and control right now," said Katie Ray-Jones, the CEO of the National Domestic Violence Hotline. "We're really bracing for a spike post-Covid-19 -- that's when law enforcement and advocates and courts are going to hear the really, really scary stuff going on behind closed doors."
