By    |   Wednesday, 11 Jun 2014 04:57 PM

Reynolds High School teacher Todd Rispler is being hailed as a hero for initiating a school lockdown after being grazed in the hip by a bullet during Tuesday’s school shooting in Troutdale, Oregon.

Rispler’s wife Kim said Tuesday evening that the teacher is "doing great," The Oregonian reported. She extended sympathy to the family of slain 14-year-old Emilio Hoffman, who was shot in a locker room.

The gunman, identified as Jared Michael Padgett, died in a nearby bathroom of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.

Rispler, 50, graduated in 1982 from Reynolds High School, where he played starting quarterback on the football team during his freshman and sophomore years. He also participated in basketball and track. He is a health and physical education teacher at the school and previously coached track, basketball, and football.

"He loves to coach kids," Bob Rispler, one of Todd Rispler's older brothers, told The Oregonian. "He's very encouraging. He's technically astute. He has a great rapport with kids."

Rispler’s actions may have saved countless lives. After initiating the lockdown, Rispler returned to the gym and helped evacuate students.

"He was just being like everybody else, just saying, 'It's OK. We're going to get through this,'" sophomore Erica Norton said, according to USA Today. "He said, 'Just get on the buses and get home get to your families.' "

Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson lauded Rispler’s response.

"I cannot emphasize enough the role that Mr. Rispler and the responding officers played in saving many, many lives yesterday," Anderson said, KGW-TV reported. "Given the weapons and amount of ammunition that the shooter was carrying, the early notification and the initial law enforcement response were critical."

Praise for Rispler spread on Twitter.
