Tim Wilson, an Australian politician, proposed to his partner Ryan Bolger while delivering a speech on same-sex marriage during a parliamentary debate on the issue on Monday, BBC News said.
Wilson is believed to be the first MP to propose on the floor of the house, and his question was met with an enthusiastic yes by Bolger, who was sitting in the gallery at the time.
"In my first speech I defined our bond by the ring that sits on both of our left hands, and they are the answer to a question we cannot ask," Wilson said in an emotional speech, according to CTV News. "There's only one thing left to do: Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?" he asked.
The proposal was greeted with a round of cheers and applause and was officially recorded in the parliamentary record.
According to USA Today, the couple have been engaged for nine years, however, as a bill that is expected to legalize same-sex marriage came to the forefront, they may finally be able to wed.
Wilson mentioned the debate of same-sex legislation in his proposal.
"This debate has been the soundtrack to our relationship," he said, per ABC News. "We both know this issue isn't the reason we got involved in politics — give us tax reform any day!"
Recently, nearly two-thirds of Australians said they supported same-sex marriage in a postal survey that would ensure Parliament considers legalizing same-sex weddings this year.
Some government lawmakers vowed to vote down gay marriage regardless of the survey's outcome. But the survey found a majority of voters in 133 of the 150 districts in the House of Representatives wanted reform.
Wilson will join 76 other MPs to speak on the bill, with a vote likely to take place this week, BBC said.
