Tim Tebow was named to the All-Star roster for the Eastern League on Friday and will play in the All-Star game for Double-A baseball, and some experts think he has a chance of being called up to the New York Mets major league roster before year’s end.
Tebow’s numbers with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies this season (.261 batting average/.335 on base percentage/.398 slugging percentage) are only slightly above the league average (.251/.325/.389), but he seems to be improving as the season goes on (.406/.424/.625 with nine runs batted in in his last 10 games), CBS Sports reported.
Tebow has had five home runs and 30 RBI in 236 plate appearances, CBS Sports reported. MLB.com reported that his .733 on-base plus slugging (OPS) ranked 35th in the Eastern League.
The Mets are currently 32-46 on the season, fueling speculation they might call up Tebow by September if he continues to do well, even if it’s just to sell more tickets based on Tebow’s continuing popularity, according to the New York Post.
CBS Sports called the 30-year-old former NFL player and Heisman Trophy winner “easily the most famous player in Double-A,” and Tebow has steadily advanced from the Grapefruit League two years ago to a Double-A All-Star this season.
Twitter fans are pulling for Tebow and seem increasingly hopeful about his big-league chances.
