"After attempting to get ready for the Masters, and failing to make the necessary progress, I decided, in consultation with my doctors, to have this procedure done," Woods, 38, said on his website after the successful microdiscectomy that was performed in Park City, Utah, for a pinched nerve.

According to the statement, Woods will begin intensive rehabilitation and soft-tissue treatment within a week and could begin chipping and putting in three weeks with the goal to resume playing sometime this summer.

“Tiger was gracious in keeping us updated of his condition and making us aware of his decision,” Billy Payne, chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, said in a statement posted on the tournament’s website. “We wholeheartedly offered our best wishes for his immediate and long-term recovery.”

"It's tough right now, but I'm absolutely optimistic about the future," Woods said.

Woods has played in the Masters every year since 1995, having won the prestigious tournaments four times, the first victory coming in 1997.

Woods’ announcement that he wouldn’t be playing in this year’s Masters predictably prompted some interesting responses on Twitter:
