Tiger vs Phil, the $10 million one-on-one golfing rivalry showdown teased for weeks, will now go down around Thanksgiving in Las Vegas.
Rumors of a winner-takes-all match between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson nearly came true last month, reportedly, but plans fell through.
The wobbly dates of Nov. 23 or Nov. 24 have now been set for a clash of the two titans – box office-wise, at least – fittingly on the greens of Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas, The Washington Post reported.
No official purse has been determined, but a $10 million payout figure has been tossed about – a figure which Mickelson told Golf.com would make anyone uncomfortable.
Sports Illustrated reported that the match would likely be broadcast on pay-per-view television and, according to Mickelson, both players would be willing to wear microphones during the event.
Woods and Mickelson have been pitted against one another by the media since their junior golfing days in Southern California, ESPN reported.
Having their rivalry exposed to the public eye did little to ease the strain of their relationship but now that the two are getting on in age they are finally getting around to becoming friends.
Mickelson said he was drawn to the idea of bypassing "all the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have kind of a high-stake, winner-take-all match," the Post noted.
"I just think it would be something that would be really fun for us to do, and I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round," he said.
