Tiger Woods’ comment about having “respect” for President Donald Trump and his office drew praise from legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus on Wednesday.
During an interview with the Golf Channel, Nacklaus said he “couldn't have agreed with Tiger more,” adding that it did not matter "whether it’s Barack Obama or Donald Trump in the office of the president, you respect the office.”
The 78-year-old veteran golfer was responding to statements which Woods made on Sunday after the final round of the Northern Trust.
When pressed about his relationship with Trump, Woods explained that he had known the president for several years and that they had played golf together in the past, ESPN reported.
When the topic of Trump’s immigration policy came up, Woods pointed out that he was the president and that one had to respect the office.
“No matter who is in the office, you may like, dislike personality or the politics, but we all must respect the office,” he said.
Nicklaus, who has been a vocal supporter of Trump, said Woods’ remarks were appropriate.
“My political views might be different from somebody else’s political views, but it doesn’t make any difference,” he said during his interview with the Golf Channel. “The office of the president is the head of the greatest country in the world.”
The comments made by Woods elicited a response from Trump, who took to Twitter to praise Woods.
“The Fake News Media worked hard to get Tiger Woods to say something that he didn’t want to say,” Trump said. “Tiger wouldn’t play the game – he is very smart. More importantly, he is playing great golf again!”
