"Thor: Ragnorak" opened on Friday on 4,080 screens and made $121 million over the opening weekend in the U.S., beating both "Thor: The Dark World" and "Doctor Strange" in opening weekend receipts.
The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe release also beat "Spider-Man: Homecoming," which had a $117 million opening weekend take. "Thor: Ragnarok" is the eighth MCU movie to make over $100 million in the first weekend, and three of those have come in 2017, which is a record for any production studio, The Wrap reported.
CNN Money reported that "Thor: Ragnarok" was the 17th Marvel Studios film (out of 17) to open at No. 1. It grossed $427 million worldwide on strong reviews and a supporting cast of other Marvel heroes like the Hulk and Doctor Strange.
The movie had a more comedic style thanks to director Taika Waititi, according to Business Insider, and is a departure from other "Thor" films in style and plot. Audiences seem to be embracing the change.
Unlike previous "Thor" movies, "Ragnarok" got an "A" Cinemascore from audiences and a 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, CNN reported. The film was the fourth-largest opening this year so far in the U.S., but may be surpassed by "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" in December.
The movie revived what has been a stagnant month.
Marvel Studios films have made more than $5 billion in the U.S. and $13 million worldwide so far, CNN reported.
Twitter users applauded the numbers.
