Thieves have targeted weddings in California and Connecticut this month, stealing wedding gifts from the unsuspecting couples.
On Oct. 11, police say, a man who posed as a wedding guest fled the Longshore Inn in Westport, Connecticut,
with a birdcage filled with wedding cards, according to WKRN-TV.
The man was seen on video cameras and tracked by dogs, but only the empty birdcage has been recovered, according to the report.
On Oct. 4, police say, a man crashed a wedding in Orange County, California, and
stole a box that contained cards, cash, and checks, according to CBS Los Angeles.
The man was seen on surveillance video casing the area near the wedding at the Tustin Ranch Golf Club. During the wedding reception, the suspect removed his jacket, concealed the box, estimated to contain about $1,000 in cash and gift cards, and walked out with it, the report said.
“We have confirmed that the suspect was not a member of the wedding party or guest at the wedding, and the golf course has been cooperating with us and he is not an employee of the golf course either,” Tustin police Lt. Robert Wright said, according to CBS Los Angeles.
Several websites offer advice on
preventing theft of wedding gifts. The Philadephia Wedding website suggests keeping gifts in a locked room, hiring security to watch the gift table, placing the gift table far from the exit and considering buying wedding insurance.
The Knot suggests creating an online registry to have gifts sent directly to the home and foregoing a gift table altogether.
