Texas State Rep. Jessica Farrar has introduced a bill fining men $100 for each time they masturbate and instituting a waiting period for Viagra and vasectomies.
Farrar knows the bill will never make it through the Republican, male-dominated legislature, but wanted to show men what it feels like to have the opposite gender try to dictate health care decisions. Farrar has long been against restrictions on abortion, which she considers women’s health care.
The bill, called A Man’s Right to Know Act, seeks to penalize masturbation because it is “an act against an unborn child,” CNN reported. It was intentionally named because a pamphlet that must be given to women seeking abortions is called “A Woman’s Right to Know.”
Farrar pointed out the pamphlet contains inaccuracies such as linking abortions to an increased risk of breast cancer, and she further stated that Texas has the highest mortality rate for mothers giving birth in the developed world.
“We have real lives to deal with,” Farrar said, CNN reported.
“HB 4260 was written to highlight the glaring inequalities in how medical and reproductive health care legislation is handled for men and women,” Farrar wrote about the bill.
Republicans were quick to respond to her statement, saying, “Her attempt to compare [HB 4260] to the abortion issue shows a lack of basic understanding of human biology,” Representative Tony Tinderholt said, NBC News reported.
Twitter users mostly either supported the anti-masturbation bill or made jokes about it.
