A Temple University freshman has died after allegedly falling out of his sixth floor dorm window on Tuesday, CBS News reported.
The university’s president, Richard M. Englert, confirmed in a statement that first-year student Richard Dalcourt died when he fell from the window of his residence hall.
The 19-year-old mechanical engineering major from New Jersey was rushed to Hahnemann Hospital but pronounced dead a short time later.
The incident has prompted officials from Temple University to encourage students to attend counselling.
"Tragedies such as these affect many members of our community," Englert said in the statement. "We join Richard’s family and friends in mourning his loss."
The Temple Student Government said in a statement that Dalcourt would be remembered as part of the community, adding that the grief of his friends and family was something shared and accepted at the university.
"In light of recent events both on our campus and in our nation, it is increasingly paramount that we pay attention to the factors that bind us together instead of tear us apart," the statement read. "Rest in peace Richard Dalcourt, you will always be remembered here."
While it is unclear how the incident occurred, some have speculated that it could have been a suicide.
Commenting on social media, one student said the topic of suicide and suicide awareness was something that needed to be discussed until it was established that the incident was an accident.
"Thinking about students work load and stress load and life outside of class should be brought up," she said, adding that it was a horrific incident that should not be "brushed under the rug."
Another student pointed out that the dorm windows did not open all the way.
"Stop referring to it as a fall," she said. "Say it as it is and stop brushing the idea of suicide under the rug. Mental health is a real issue especially with college students."
