Teen's $54K Bar Tab on Dad's Credit Card Won't Get Paid in Full

Talk about squeaking out of a load of trouble: The father whose son ran up a $54K bar tab on his dad's credit card is not going to be held responsible for paying the entire bill, a court in Japan has ruled.

A judge in Kyoto District Court decided that the brunt of the blame belongs with the night club owners and credit card company, which in one alcohol-fueled night allowed a 16-year-old to run up a bill on a platinum American Express card to the tune of 5.5 million yen. The father is being held liable for 800,000 yen. The incident took place in 2010.

While Kyoto is known as a culturally rich city with 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, more than 1600 Buddhist temples, and more than 400 Shinto shrines, that is not the tour the two boys took.

According to Japanese media reports, the two boys were allowed in very high-end ‘Hostess bars,’ essentially night clubs where clients are expected to pay for enjoying the company of paid hostesses, while drinking 3,700-yen wine, whiskey, and beer. According to Wikipedia, the hostesses pour drinks, light cigarettes, sing karaoke, and pretend that the men are interesting conversationalists. The Japanese government has gradually been cracking down on the more exploitive clubs. There was no suggestion in the court case or the press that the two boys paid for sex.
