Taylor Swift Cat Scratch: Singer Jokes Pet Owes Her $40 Million

By    |   Monday, 16 March 2015 05:57 PM EDT

Megastar Taylor Swift’s cat may be in debt for $40 million after it left a scratch on the singer’s leg Saturday.

Goofing off on Twitter and Instagram, Swift posted a picture of a long and jagged scratch inflicted by her cat, Meredith, and said, “Great work, Meredith. I was just trying to love you and now you owe me 40 million dollars.”

Swift was joking about a recent National Enquirer report that she was insuring her legs for $40 million.

“It seems like a ludicrous sum, but if something was to happen to her legs, Taylor wouldn’t be able to give her signature stage performances,” a source reportedly told the tabloid magazine. “Her $200 million career would be in big trouble.”

Swift’s leg tweet has been retweeted more than 49,000 times. One fan asked, “@taylorswift13 Can she pay you in catnip!”

The singer continued the joke on Instagram on Sunday:

Couldn't help but make it into a pun, could I...

The Instagram post drew 1.3 million likes, not surprising since the singer has 24.2 million followers.

Swift is a well-known cat lover, posting pictures of her pets online frequently.

They've come a long way since the hourly cat fights of the past.
