After finding itself caught in the crossfire of recent gun-control battles, Target launched a gun policy on Wednesday in which the retailer said it would “respectfully request” that customers not bring firearms to its stores “even in communities where it is permitted by law.”
“This is a complicated issue, but it boils down to a simple belief:
Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create,” interim CEO John Mulligan said on the company’s website.

Target’s policy comes after gun-rights groups in Texas posted photographs of members carrying rifles through store aisles. In response, gun-control group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, funded by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, launched a social media campaign to boycott Target.
“Moms everywhere were horrified to see images of people carrying loaded assault rifles down the same aisles where we shop for diapers and toys," the gun-control group’s founder, Shannon Watts, said in a statement.
The action
hasn’t deterred gun-rights activists, according to Reuters, which reported that Open Carry Tarrant County, a gun-rights group that has drawn much attention, said members will continue to carry weapons in public.
The group posted a response to Target’s policy on its Facebook page.
Other retailers including Chipotle, Starbucks, Sonic, Chili's, and Jack in the Box have asked customers to leave their guns at home.
