You come home late from work tired and hungry. But the last thing you feel like doing is cooking dinner, so you order takeout.

Nothing wrong with that, right?

It depends on what you order.

From soggy meatball subs to fat-congealed steak and dishes teeming with bacteria and viruses that cause food-borne illness, you need to know what menu items to avoid.

24/7 Tempo and analyzed various health reports, investigated what foods could present a health risk if not stored correctly, and then reviewed the shocking confessions of restaurant employees. Based on these findings, here are nine takeout foods you should never order as delivery:

  1. Sushi. There are many reasons to not order sushi for delivery. In many instances, the fish is mislabeled, so you are not necessarily getting what you ordered. Furthermore, raw fish can be a serious health risk if it sits out at room temperature for too long. Order this at a sit-down restaurant instead.
  2. Meatball subs. When ordered and eaten immediately, this sandwich tastes delicious. But leave it to stand and the sauce will soon make the sub soggy. By the time it arrives at your doorstep, the meatball sub will be an unidentifiable mess.
  3. Steak. This dish should be served hot but if you are ordering it for delivery, don't count on experiencing that succulent first bite. Instead, you will likely sink your teeth into a fat congealed, chewy, and lukewarm piece of meat.
  4. Rice noodles. Another dish that is best eaten fresh. Left to stand, rice noodles do one of two things — they either soak up all the soup or sauce they are submerged in or they turn rock hard. Either way, it is not the best way to eat this meal.
  5. Soup. When packaged for delivery, soup is poured into plastic containers, many of which contain BPAs. At issue is that hot liquids leach the chemicals from their containers, so you are not doing your body any favors ordering soup for delivery.
  6. Salad. In theory, salads are the healthier option, but ordering them for delivery is another question. In many instances, salads are pre-made and left to sit in plastic containers for days until the toppings get added. This is the ideal breeding ground for bacteria.
  7. Antipasto salad. You may not even realize that the lunch meat and cheese from your antipasto salad has gone bad because the establishment serving the dish drenches it with Italian dressing, which can mask flavors.
  8. Veggie burgers. If you are ordering a veggie burger because you are vegetarian or vegan, don't get too excited. Many fast-food joints store the veggie burgers with meat and even prepare them on the grill used for meat.
  9. Fresh-squeezed juice. Another "healthy food" that is not so saintly. Freshly-squeezed juices that are unpasteurized may be breeding bacteria that could make you sick.
