Taco Bell began serving its much anticipated $1 nacho fries on Thursday, and reviews from those who tried them was mixed, with most agreeing that they are different from other fast-food offerings and a pleasant enough addition to Taco Bell’s dollar menu.
The fries are Mexican-seasoned and served with nacho cheese dipping sauce. A Supreme version is also available with ground beef, tomatoes, and sour cream for $2.49, and the Grande version offers additional toppings like pico de gallo and guacamole for $3.49, according to Business Insider.
While most taste testers agreed that the cheese sauce was a nice touch, many criticized the seasoning on the fries as lacking spiciness, and opinions on the fries themselves ranged from Business Insider calling them “floppy” to Eater reporting the inside of the fries were like mashed potatoes.
The fries will be sold until March and are one of about 20 items being added to the $1 menu this year as fast food chains give more emphasis to lower-priced value items, USA Today reported.
It is the first time Taco Bell has offered french fries on its menu, and many see it as a way to compete with other fast-food retailers like McDonald’s and Burger King, USA Today reported.
There was plenty of buzz for the nacho fries on Twitter.
