A T-shirt company reportedly has been selling Dylann Roof gear commemorating the South Carolina man convicted of killing nine black worshippers at a Charleston church in 2015.
Newsweek noted that at least three items of clothing that appear to pay tribute to the gunman were being sold on Teespring's website.
According to the report, there were two sweatshirts being sold with Roof's image featured on the front, and another shirt cracking a nod at his distinctive bowl cut and the slogan "Keep Calm and Roof On."
The bowl cut has become a meme used by members of the far-right, with fans of the neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer reportedly using it to pay homage to Roof.
Addressing this, a spokesperson for Teespring told Newsweek that the designs had somehow managed to slip past a content "filter" used to recognize language and imagery but added that the shirts had since been removed.
The spokesperson noted that 13 of the T-shirts had been sold but none of the sweatshirts had been purchased.
This is not the first time Teespring has come under fire for selling offensive apparel.
Last year the company, which receives backings from top names in Silicon Valley, apologized for allowing customers to create and sell shirts containing racial slurs against African-Americans, according to USA Today.
Teespring is built around the concept that small entrepreneurs can create and sell items featuring custom designs and slogans on its website. Melissa Arnoff, a crisis communications specialist based in Washington D.C., told USA Today the company functions similar to social media platforms and therefore encounters similar issues.
"You can share any idea you want — even if the shirt's not printed yet you see the image on the website. So it's got many of the issues that social media platforms have. As in so many areas, it's made ideas so accessible," she said.
