Syria secretly executed thousands of prisoners in an effort to eliminate outrage against the country’s president, according to a report issued by Amnesty International on Tuesday.

According to the report, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government executed between 5,000 and 13,000 prisoners at Sednaya prison, located outside of Damascus, between 2011 and 2015, The Washington Post reported.

One former prisoner said those killed were mostly “doctors, engineers, protesters” who were believed “to be linked to the revolution.”

The prisoner added that “Sednaya is the place to finish the revolutionaries. It’s the end for them.”

According to The Associated Press, military police in the Syrian prison – also known as “the slaughterhouse” – reportedly hung prisoners and then loaded up trucks with their bodies before disposing of them at different grave sites.

The report said 20 to 50 people were hanged every week during the four-year period.

In 2011, people erupted into outrage over the government’s rule, which is believed to be the core reason why these thousands of secret killings occurred, according to The Washington Post.

“The horrors depicted in this report reveal a hidden, monstrous campaign, authorized at the highest levels of the Syrian government, aimed at crushing any form of dissent within the Syrian population,” said Lynn Maalouf, deputy for research at Amnesty’s regional office in Beirut, the AP noted.

“These executions take place after a sham trial that lasts over a minute or two minutes, but they are authorized by the highest levels of authority,” Maalouf added.

The Syrian government hasn’t commented on the allegations, but has denied similar reports in the past, referring to them as propaganda, the AP said.

According to the report, there have been many other deaths among detainees at the Syrian prison who were "repeatedly tortured and systematically deprived of food, water, medicine and medical care," Reuters reported.
