The first super blue blood moon eclipse is coming our way this month, a very rare occasion that hasn't occurred for more than 150 years, according to Space.com.

The spectacular celestial event will be arriving on Jan. 31, when stargazers will bear witness to the coincidental alignment of three different types of moon cycles occurring simultaneously that night.

We rung into the new year with a supermoon, a term that refers to when a full moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit and appears about 14 percent bigger and brighter than normal.

Now a second full moon will light up the skies on Jan. 31, a phenomenon referred to as a "blue moon," which takes place every two and a half years, The Miami Herald noted.

What makes this event so special is that the moon will align precisely between the sun and Earth, producing a lunar eclipse, or "blood moon."

This phenomenon only occurs about twice each year, NASA noted, and when it does, the moon loses its brightness and takes on a fainter, eerie red glow.

"We're seeing all of the Earth's sunrises and sunsets at that moment reflected from the surface of the moon," Sarah Noble, a program scientist at NASA headquarters, said in a statement.

The last time a total eclipse of a blue moon occurred was March 31, 1866, Space.com noted. The next blue moon eclipse will occur on Dec. 31, 2028.

This month's super blue moon eclipse will have little scientific relevance as the moon's orbit is well understood already, said Florida International University astronomy professor Caroline Simpson, per The Miami Herald.

However, she said that it could help ignite an interest in science among members of the public.

It could also stir up a wave of controversy.

"Prophecisor" Pastor Paul Begley has once again taken to YouTube to warn of the prophetic significance of the rare super blue blood moon, which he noted falls on a Jewish festival holiday.

Meanwhile, Charisma Magazine noted that the astronomical event would deliver a "triple-dose of divine judgment to the haters of Israel."
