A "summa cum laude" cake ordered online by a proud Charleston, South Carolina, mom for her graduating son was delivered with part of the inscription censored after it was deemed a "profanity" by the cake maker.
Cara Koscinski had organized a special party to celebrate that her son, Jacob Koscinski, had graduated summa cum laude from his Christian-based home-school with a 4.89 grade-point average, The Washington Post noted.
She wanted to mark the occasion with a cake featuring a custom message that read "Congrats Jacob! Summa Cum Laude class of 2018," however after placing her order with the grocery store Publix, the word "cum" was flagged as a profanity.
The word derives its origin from a Latin word meaning "with," Quora noted, however in slang terms it takes on a far naughtier nature.
Publix's online ordering system replaced the word with three dashes.
When the big day arrived, Cara Koscinski sent her husband and sister to pick the cake up, but they did not check it before returning home.
It was only once the whole family had gathered round the table and the cake box was opened that the censored word was made obvious.
"Shame on you Publix for turning an innocent Latin phrase into a total embarrassment for having to explain to my son and others (including my 70 year old mother) about this joke of a cake," Cara Koscinski said in a post to Facebook.
She added that her son was "humiliated" by the whole ordeal.
Publix has since offered the family a refund and a store gift card, but as Cara Koscinski pointed out, "you only graduate once," The Washington Post noted.
It seems customers have to be careful about what they order when it comes to customized cake inscriptions.
Recently, a request for a "Blue Lives Matter" cake for a woman who wanted to celebrate her dad’s retirement from being a police officer was reportedly refused by three workers at a Georgia Walmart.
In this incident, the woman was told by the Walmart workers that the cake was racist and nobody felt comfortable decorating it.
